Piezoelectric effect
If an external force acts on a piezoelectric crystal, the charges in the crystal move. These small charges are collected at the electrodes and converted into a measurement signal in a highly sensitive charge amplifier. Piezoelectric sensors have a very short response time and are suitable for highly dynamic force measurements. Compared to strain gauge sensors, piezoelectric sensors can operate at much higher temperatures. In addition, both large and small forces can be detected with just one piezoelectric sensor.
